MicroStrategy Copycat ETFs Are Now Bigger Than MicroStrategy Stock

Retail traders wanted Bitcoin leverage with a stock ticker, so Wall Street gave them three — and they bought $2.4 billion worth in nine months.

MicroStrategy — the software company that became a Bitcoin treasury play — now has three leveraged ETFs tracking it. Combined, they hold more than $2.4 billion in assets. For context, MicroStrategy's entire market cap is around $28 billion, and its average daily trading volume is $1.1 billion. The leveraged products are eating a meaningful slice of the action.

The largest is MSTR from Defiance, launched in August 2024. It's a 2x daily long that's pulled in $1.6 billion. Then there's MSTZ from T-REX, a 2x inverse short with $520 million. And MSTU from Tuttle, another 2x long, sitting at $340 million. All three have exploded in volume since Bitcoin bounced back above $84,000 this week. MSTR alone traded $680 million on Thursday.

Here's the setup: MicroStrategy owns roughly 244,000 Bitcoin. It doesn't mine, doesn't lend, doesn't stake. It just buys spot BTC using cash, converts, and debt. That makes the stock a leveraged bet on Bitcoin — roughly 1.8x to 2.5x depending on how much debt they've issued that quarter. Now wrap that in a 2x daily ETF and you've got leverage on leverage. It's a nesting doll of volatility.

You wanted 2x Bitcoin exposure? Now you've got 2x exposure to a stock that's already 3x levered to Bitcoin.

Retail loves it because it's cleaner than futures, doesn't expire like options, and lives in a brokerage account. You want convexity? You got it. You want to get liquidated by a 6% drawdown? Also available. MSTZ, the inverse, has become the new way to short Bitcoin without touching a crypto exchange. It's pulled in half a billion dollars, mostly from people who think Michael Saylor's debt stack is a Jenga tower.

The ETFs reset daily, so they decay in chop and rip in trends. This week was a trend. Bitcoin climbed from $81,000 to $86,000, MSTR the stock ran 14%, and MSTR the ETF did 28%. People who bought Monday are up double digits in four days. People who bought in July are still underwater, but we don't talk about July.

The irony: MicroStrategy itself is already a leveraged vehicle. The company has $4.2 billion in convertible debt and keeps issuing more to buy Bitcoin. Saylor has said the goal is to be 'the best way to get Bitcoin exposure in a brokerage account.' Mission accomplished — except now the best way is apparently a 2x ETF of the best way. It's turtles all the way down, and every turtle is borrowing money.

None of this is financial advice, but if you're holding MSTU into the weekend, check your blood pressure. Bitcoin's up, the ETFs are ripping, and everyone's having fun until the next 15% flush. Then it's MSTZ's turn, and the cycle starts again.
